As part of its ongoing commitment to fostering a sensitive, inclusive, and compassionate educational environment, the counselling unit at KSJC organised an advanced sensitization session for its teaching faculty on supporting LGBTQ+ students. This initiative built upon the foundational session conducted in the previous academic year, where educators were introduced to key concepts such as terminology, sexual orientation, gender identity, and the challenges commonly faced by LGBTQ+ individuals. This session was conducted on 27th March 2026 and was facilitated by Dr. Mridula Apte, Clinical Psychologist.
Recognizing the need to move beyond awareness toward practical implementation, this year’s session aimed to focus on equipping teachers with actionable strategies to support students effectively, particularly adolescents. This developmental stage is crucial, as students often experience significant emotional, social, and psychological changes while forming their identities
A major focus of the session was on creating safe and inclusive classroom environments. Teachers were guided on using inclusive language, setting respectful classroom norms, and fostering a culture where all students feel seen, valued, and accepted. The session also addressed how educators can respond appropriately when a student chooses to disclose their sexual orientation or gender identity. Emphasis was placed on active listening, maintaining a non-judgmental approach, and providing reassurance without making assumptions.
In addition, the session helped teachers recognize early signs of emotional distress among students, such as withdrawal, anxiety, or changes in behaviour. Teachers were introduced to methods of offering first-level support within their role and understanding when it is necessary to involve school counsellors or other support systems.
Another critical aspect of the session was managing confidentiality and navigating communication with parents. Teachers were guided on maintaining student trust while adhering to institutional policies and handling sensitive situations with care and professionalism via role play.
The session also addressed the importance of tackling bullying, bias, and the use of insensitive language within the school environment. Teachers were provided with practical strategies cultivate empathy among students.
Overall, the session aimed to strengthen the capacity of educators to create a supportive and inclusive learning environment for all students. By focusing on practical approaches and real-life scenarios, the initiative ensured that every student feels safe, respected, and empowered within the school community.
