Adoption of River Stretch at Dattawadi near Matre Bridge

On 16 September 2026, the second session of Jeevit Nadi was conducted to adopt the river stretch at Dattawadi Visarjan Ghat, near Matre Bridge. A group of 18 students from Grade 8 participated in the visit. The session aimed to help students understand the condition of the river stretch, observe its surroundings and develop a sense of responsibility towards its conservation.

As the visit took place soon after the Ganapati festival, the area appeared clean, with freshly painted gates and walls. The students were encouraged to explore the space and make their own observations.

During the exploration, students observed relatively clean water and discussed how the river is used by people living nearby, including for washing clothes. They also noticed plastic waste such as compass boxes, writing pads and other discarded items. The students observed various forms of biodiversity, including giant sedges, shells, dragonflies and guppy fish.

An important learning point was the impact of pollution and plastic waste on aquatic life. The students learnt about the Cherry Barb, a fish species that was once found in the area but is no longer seen there. This helped them understand how changes in the river environment can affect aquatic organisms.

The visit connected classroom learning with real-life observations and encouraged students to take responsibility for keeping the adopted river stretch clean and protecting its biodiversity.
