A laboratory-based practical session on DNA extraction from fruit, introducing students to the basic principles of isolating deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA)—the “molecule of life”—was conducted as an experiential learning activity.
Significance of the Session
The session provided students with an opportunity to translate fundamental concepts of molecular biology into a practical laboratory experience. Through the extraction of DNA from fruit, students gained an understanding of the basic steps involved in cell disruption, separation of cellular components, and isolation of DNA.
The practical was particularly significant in highlighting the importance of purified biological molecules such as DNA in modern biomedical science. Understanding DNA extraction and purification forms the foundation for several applications, including genetic analysis, disease diagnosis, biotechnology, forensic science, and research into the molecular basis of health and disease. The session therefore helped students appreciate how basic laboratory techniques contribute to advanced developments in life sciences and healthcare.
The session was facilitated by Prof. Jeremy Simpson, Principal and Dean of Science, UCD College of Science, Ireland. Prof. Simpson is a distinguished cell biologist with more than two decades of research experience across leading research institutions in the United Kingdom, the United States, and Germany. His expertise and academic leadership added considerable value to the session, providing students with an opportunity to connect practical laboratory learning with contemporary biological research and its wider applications.
Conclusion
Overall, the DNA extraction practical served as an effective introductory laboratory experience, strengthening students’ understanding of molecular biology through hands-on learning. It also fostered scientific curiosity and demonstrated the relevance of fundamental laboratory skills to research, healthcare, and the understanding of human health and disease. Students asked a lot of questions. Prof. Simpson also spoke about the education in Ireland.
