Report on Session for Grade XI Gifted Students

A special enrichment session was organized for the Grade XI Gifted Students with the objective of helping them understand the concept of giftedness, its characteristics, and its long-term purpose. The session was conducted by a distinguished resource person, Dr. Narayan Desai, a Mensa member and an academician holding two PhDs in Ecology, who brought both intellectual depth and personal insight into the discussion on giftedness.

The session began with an engaging introduction where the speaker addressed the fundamental question: “What does it truly mean to be gifted?” He emphasized that giftedness is not limited to high IQ scores or academic excellence alone, but is a multidimensional phenomenon that includes creativity, sensitivity, curiosity, leadership, moral awareness, and an intense drive to understand the world. He highlighted that gifted individuals often think differently, feel deeply, and question more intensely than others.

The speaker then guided students through the A–Z of Giftedness, a unique framework where each alphabet represented a distinct trait commonly observed in gifted individuals. Through this structure, students were able to relate abstract concepts to real-life experiences. Traits discussed included Analytical thinking, Bold curiosity, Creative imagination, Divergent thinking, Emotional intensity, Fearlessness in questioning, Goal orientation, High sensitivity, and many others. Each trait was explained with relatable examples from academic life, social interactions, and personal growth, allowing students to recognize these characteristics within themselves.

A significant portion of the session focused on the challenges faced by gifted students. The speaker addressed issues such as boredom in traditional classrooms, perfectionism, fear of failure, social isolation, and the pressure of high expectations. He reassured students that these challenges are common and can be managed through self-awareness, mentorship, and purposeful engagement. He stressed the importance of emotional balance and resilience alongside intellectual development.

The session also explored what can be done for gifted learners. Students were encouraged to take ownership of their learning, pursue research, ask unconventional questions, and collaborate with like-minded peers.

In conclusion, the speaker addressed where giftedness should lead. He strongly conveyed that giftedness is not merely a personal advantage but a responsibility toward society. It stays with the person life long and doesn’t fade. Gifted individuals, he stated, should aim to contribute meaningfully to the society. The session concluded with an inspiring message that giftedness, when guided by purpose, ethics, and compassion, can become a powerful force for positive change.

Overall, the session was highly insightful, thought-provoking, and motivating. It helped students gain clarity about their abilities, challenges, and responsibilities, leaving them inspired to channel their giftedness toward lifelong learning and societal contribution.
