Session Report: Pornography Addiction

An awareness session on Pornography Addiction was conducted for Grade XI students on 21st annuary 2026 with the aim of sensitizing them to the psychological, emotional, and social consequences of excessive exposure to pornographic content.

The session commenced with a TEDx video presentation, which explained the addictive and paralyzing effects of pornography and introduced the concept of social death, emphasizing how addiction can lead to emotional withdrawal and social isolation.

Following the video, the resource person Dr. Devasena Desai, an experienced Psychologist, addressed the students and discussed prevalent myths associated with pornography consumption. It was explained that adolescents and young adults are often drawn to pornography due to curiosity, excitement, thrill, and the urge to engage in socially unacceptable behaviour. However, students were made aware that this short-lived thrill often leads to shame, guilt, remorse, fear, and psychological distress.

The session further highlighted that exposure to pornography leaves lasting mental imprints, which can negatively affect emotional well-being. Students were informed about potential outcomes such as depression, anxiety, excessive time consumption, distorted perceptions of relationships, negative thought patterns, and an inability to experience real intimacy. It was emphasized that pornography is highly exaggerated and unrealistic, and many individuals involved in the industry experience exploitation, abuse, and violation, thereby indirectly supporting unethical practices.

Practical strategies were suggested to help students manage urges, including complete avoidance, engaging in healthy alternative activities, and exercising self-control and conscious choice. Students were reminded that maintaining a positive mental narrative lies within their personal responsibility.

The session concluded with a feedback interaction. Students responded positively, describing the session as timely and relevant, and appreciated the safe and open environment provided for discussion. Overall, the program was impactful and well-received.
