Session on Emotional Regulation 2023

College counsellors Smita Pradhan and Gayatri Borse conducted session on Emotional Regulation for college students under the Psychology Club – Aastha. Session started with the icebreaker activity and then students were divided in groups to conduct activity related to emotional regulation. After 20 minutes of discussion on the given activity, counsellors conducted further session.

Duration: 1hr 30min

Objective: The session aimed to enlighten college students on the intricacies of emotional regulation, encompassing understanding reactions, emphasizing the significance of feeling emotions before reacting, exploring techniques for emotional regulation, discussing the impact of suppressing tears on neuroplasticity, and delving into the roles of the amygdala and prefrontal cortex in managing heightened emotions.

In the session, counsellors explained how we instinctively react when emotions hit and how these reactions can affect our overall happiness and relationships. They stressed the importance of letting ourselves fully feel emotions before reacting, which helps us understand ourselves better and connect with others.

Counsellors then discussed simple techniques like mindfulness, deep breathing, and journaling, as well as activities like dancing and exercising, to help manage emotions. These are practical tools that anyone can use when facing emotional challenges.

Another topic that was discussed was how suppressing tears might affect our brain’s flexibility (neuroplasticity) and why finding healthy ways to express emotions is crucial. Students learnt the concept that suppressing tears may impact neuroplasticity, shedding light on the potential cognitive effects and the importance of finding healthy outlets for emotional expression.

Counsellors also explained the role of the amygdala in intense emotions and impulsive reactions, emphasizing the need for conscious regulation. Exploring the prefrontal cortex, students learned about its role in decision-making and controlling emotions. Strengthening these cognitive processes is key for effective emotional regulation.

Conclusion:
The session concluded with a Q&A session, allowing participants to seek clarification and share personal insights. Participants expressed increased awareness of their emotional responses and a commitment to implementing the discussed strategies for emotional regulation in their lives.

Overall, the session provided a foundational understanding of emotional regulation, equipped participants with practical tools, and fostered a sense of empowerment in managing their emotional well-being.
