Session titled ‘Failure leads to growth, success can often be limiting’ facilitated by Capt Shekhar Pimpalkhare.
Capt. Shekhar Pimpalkhare began the session with an exercise for students which involved critical thinking, ability to think divergently and prioritizing.
Students were made to read an imaginary incident of a rescue operation at the Atlantic sea which they had to carry and the task given to them was, to rank the items needed for that operation in terms of their importance.
He shared his life journey starting from his career as a master mariner, having acquired multiple academic degrees in nautical studies, up to his passion of venturing into hospitality business and later in the field of education.
He shared with students the challenges he faced in his non linear career while he was working on bulk carriers as a crisis and risk management trainer and also as a consultant for setting up the restaurants.
He underwent a physical ailment of Hip bone surgery, was bed ridden for 1 year and lost all hopes to work again in the same domain.
He utilized that period as an opportunity to rethink about his career line in future.
His major learning from his life is to treat failures as opportunities to learn.
Life is a gift to be enjoyed was his message to students.
His advised students to be disciplined in life, develop adaptability quotient, learn perseverance and consistency. He mentioned 3 roots of making a living, which he experienced himself, namely being an employee (work for somebody), an employer (own business) and self employment (work for yourself).
He made students realize the importance of finding good mentors in life and asking for their help whenever required.
His infatuation of building the emotional competence with school students has led him contribute immensely in the field of experiential education and behavioural sciences.
