As a part of Enriching Minds Program, a session was organised on 11th February, 2023 for the students on Developing an Emotional Quotient. The session was facilitated by Ms. Smita Pradhan, Junior College Counsellor.
EQ, as it is popularly known as, most of us are ignorant about even the most basic emotional triggers we face.Like IQ, which measures the cognitive ability, Emotional Quotient or EQ is the ability to identify, understand, manage and use our own emotions and understand the emotions of others, and it is a highly desired skill in all the areas of life.
Also, the adolescents can become more productive and successful at what they do by increasing their EQ. Researches also suggest that emotional health is fundamental to effective learning. Adolescents with high EQ, are self-aware; essentially motivated to have very good academic performance; have good relationship with everyone and not have conflicts with peer group and are likely to gain better self control. Also, they get better social support. Usually, how people handle their emotions directly impacts how they will react in social situations.
It is with this background the session was planned for adolescents. The idea to have this session for the students was majorly to prepare them for the Parivartan… as if you are prepared to change yourself then only can you change the others around you.
The session revolved around, concept of EQ, why it is important to develop EQ, importance of EQ in connection with IQ, components of EQ like – self awareness, self regulation, empathy, mindfulness and motivation. How these affect at interpersonal level was explained with the help of day to day examples.
This session went on for almost 1 and a half hour and ended with question and answers. Students found it quite relatable and appreciated it.
