A session was organised for the Gifted students on 1st July 2022 on Metacognition… think about your own thinking. It was facilitated by Dr. P. Vijayalakshmi, a professor, Psychiatrist and an author.
Metacognition literally means awareness and understanding of one’s own thought processes. It refers to mainly understanding and controlling cognition. People with good metacognitive skills are at the helm of their own learning process through which they can execute a learning task more effectively.
The basic objective of the session was to
a. Enable students to become flexible, creative and self-directed learners
b. Help them understand additional educational needs in understanding learning tasks, in self-organising and in regulating their own learning.
c. And become more self-aware problem solver and take control of your learning.
It was quite informative session which taught them to be strategic about their approach. Once they apply the strategies they would have a better understanding of what they already know, what they need to work on, and how best to approach learning new material. This can increase their confidence, competence, and self-esteem. It can also reduce anxiety about tests and deadlines. By developing metacognitive regulation, one can help learn techniques to study in a smarter way leaving more time for other things in life.
The session was quite simplified and practical oriented which was appreciated by the students. The students expressed that they would be in a better position to plan for their studies.
