On the occasion of World Mental Health Day, the Department of Psychology and Counselling Unit of Kalmadi Shamarao Junior College, Pune, organised a special movie screening for students, with the objective of promoting mental health awareness, empathy and a better understanding of mental health issues.
The screening featured a short film on Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), highlighting the challenges associated with attention, concentration, impulsivity and everyday functioning. The film encouraged students to look beyond common stereotypes and recognise that difficulties with attention or behaviour should not automatically be interpreted as laziness, carelessness or a lack of discipline.
The screening was followed by an interactive debriefing and discussion, which provided students with an opportunity to reflect on the experiences portrayed in the film. Through thought-provoking questions, students were encouraged to consider how individuals with ADHD may experience academic and social situations differently, and how misunderstandings, labelling and judgement can affect their self-esteem and relationships.
The discussion also emphasised the importance of understanding individual differences, responding with compassion rather than criticism, and creating supportive and inclusive environments within educational institutions. Students were encouraged to recognise the importance of seeking appropriate professional guidance when required and to understand that a mental health condition does not define a person’s abilities, potential or worth.
The activity served as a meaningful platform for initiating conversations around mental health, challenging misconceptions and sensitising students to the importance of empathy and acceptance. It reinforced the message that awareness leads to understanding, and understanding paves the way for inclusion and support.
