TOPIC: MEETING EXPECTATIONS AND DEALING WITH PRESSURES
Session Overview
The session titled Meeting Expectations and Dealing with Pressures was conducted to address the increasing academic, social, and emotional challenges faced by students in their Grade XII. Through a series of reflective and interactive activities, the session aimed to build emotional awareness, normalize the conversation around stress, and equip students with practical tools for managing expectations and fostering resilience.
Objectives of the Session
- Understand the nature and sources of expectations (self, parents, peers, society)
- Recognize the emotional impact of academic and social pressures
- Learn coping strategies for stress and anxiety
- Gain insight into healthy goal-setting and time management
- Know when and how to seek help
Session Flow and Highlights
The session began with an icebreaker Raise hand If… which revealed shared experiences around academic pressure and emotional struggles. The debrief highlighted how many students silently deal with similar stressors, creating a sense of empathy and connection. This activity made them feel less alone.
Through a short talk and group discussion, students explored the difference between internal and external expectations. They reflected on whether these expectations were motivating or overwhelming.
Discussion Themes:
- Pressure to meet family expectations
- Fear of disappointing others
- Difficulty distinguishing self-worth from academic performance
Post this, Students were given reflective prompts to explore their own emotional landscape around pressure. Silent journaling allowed for introspection and emotional release. Validation of feelings was encouraged.
After these conversations, 4 practical stress management techniques were introduced.
- 4-7-8 Breathing (for anxiety relief)
- Pomodoro Technique (for structured studying)
- Gratitude Journaling (for emotional balance)
- Affirmations and Self-Compassion (for inner strength)
Real-life examples were shared to reinforce that small changes can lead to significant emotional improvement.
The session then further navigated through two core exercises :
- Circle of Control: Visualizing what is within vs. outside their control helped students let go of unproductive worries.
- ABC Model (CBT Tool): Students learned how their beliefs, not just events, influence emotional responses — and how to reframe negative self-talk.
Student Quote:
“I realized I can’t control my results, but I can control how I prepare. That gives me some peace.”
A safe space was created for students to share questions and concerns anonymously. As a facilitator I highlighted that seeking support is a strength, not a weakness.
Key Takeaways
- Students appreciated the safe space to express themselves.
- The session helped normalize stress and validate emotional struggles.
- Many students were unaware of simple coping tools that can be easily practiced.
