LGBTQ Awareness Session

To foster inclusivity, awareness, and sensitivity among the staff of KGI, Dr. Kalmadi Shamarao Junior College organized an LGBTQ Awareness Session on 16th November 2024
at Smt. Shakuntala Jagannath Shetty Auditorium. The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from staff members across various institutes under the Kaveri group.

 

The session began with a warm welcome by Smita Pradhan. The speakers and guests for the occasion, Mr. Bindumadhav Khire, Dr. Mridula Apte, and Ms. Rujuta Deshmankar, were introduced with brief highlights of their expertise and contributions to the LGBTQ community. As a gesture of gratitude and respect, the speakers were felicitated with mementos by senior members of the management.

 

Further, Mrs. Malati Kalmadi, Secretary, Kannada Sangha, delivered a thought-provoking address, emphasizing the importance of understanding and supporting the LGBTQ community in educational institutes. She highlighted how times have changed and such sessions are the need of the hour in order to contribute to building an inclusive workplace where everyone feels valued and respected.

 

The first speaker, Mr. Bindumadhav Khire, engaged the audience with an insightful talk which focused on understanding the LGBTQ spectrum and the unique problems faced by the members of this community. He shed light on the key concepts, myths, and challenges faced by the LGBTQ community in professional and personal spaces. Mr. Bindumadhav also talked about the legal aspects of this topic and discussed policy-making at educational institutes to make them more inclusive, as well as do’s and don’ts that should be followed by the staff. He took questions from the audience and comprehensively answered them throughout the session. His interactive approach encouraged staff members to reflect on their perspectives.

 

The second speaker, Ms. Rujuta Deshmankar, focused on “Discrimination Detox.” She shared practical tips about inclusivity at educational institutions, modifying anti-bullying policies, and how small yet significant changes in attitudes and policies can create a safe and accepting environment for all employees and students.

 

The session concluded with an eloquent summarization by Dr. Devasena Desai, who recapped the key points discussed. She emphasized the responsibility of each staff member in fostering inclusivity and expressed gratitude to the speakers, participants, and organizers for their active involvement, extending a special mention to Mrs. Rashmi Deshmukh for all her efforts. A heartfelt vote of thanks was extended to the management for their support and vision in organizing the session.

 

The LGBTQ Awareness Session proved to be an enlightening and impactful event, equipping staff with knowledge and tools to contribute positively to an inclusive institutional culture. and understanding.
