Dr. Kalmadi Shamrao Kannada Medium High School, Ketkar Road, Pune, was honoured by the visit of Mysore Maharaja Sri Yaduveer Krishnadatta Chamaraja Wodeyar on November 13, 2024, marking a memorable moment for the institution and the Kannada-speaking community.
The Maharaja was accorded a traditional welcome with aarti and tilak, followed by cultural performances including Lezim dance and Mallakhamba by students. Interacting with students, he stressed that speaking Kannada in daily life is the foremost step in preserving Karnataka’s culture and heritage, and expressed admiration for the language’s depth and traditions.
Recalling history, he spoke about Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s formative years in Bengaluru, highlighting how exposure to South Indian military practices and cultural diversity shaped Shivaji’s inclusive governance. Addressing the gathering on the occasion of Karnataka Rajyotsava, the Maharaja reflected on Karnataka’s unification and the contributions of the Wodeyar dynasty, emphasizing unity in diversity. He also acknowledged the role of the Kannada Sahitya Parishad and Kannada Sangha in promoting Kannada language and culture.
During the visit, the Maharaja inaugurated a new library at the school, supported by the Mysore-based Kalisu Foundation in collaboration with World Wide Trade.
Several dignitaries from the school management, Kannada Sangha, Kalisu Foundation, and World Wide Trade were present. The programme was compered by Principal Mrs. Jyothi Kadkol, and the vote of thanks was proposed by Mrs. Shobha Panchangamath.
