I CAN-Design for Change!! 2016-17
Our school Dr. Kalmadi Shamarao high school secondary section has a remedial section since many years. Though a remedial section is there, very few people are aware of the process of it. Children who come there are usually teased, troubled and bullied by others. They are labeled many times as mad or crazy just because they have some learning difficulty and they are not performing well in academics. This type of teasing many times leads to emotional disturbances and low confidence in these children.
Hence this year after brainstorming children shortlisted this issue of learning disabilities to bring change in the school. They have decided to sensitize the teachers and students about this topic, its sub-types and the process. They have named this program as ‘Be Empathetic and Not Sympathetic’. We addressed students and teachers through various types of strategies including exhibition, skit, posters, power point presentation, short film, charts, poem and a logo made by the students.
Students and teachers gave feedback that after being a part these activities they are now aware of the issue. Their attitude towards children with learning disabilities started changing slowly. They are now aware of why these children are pulled out and what do they do during remedial classes. Even the students can now be empathetic and understand that how these children must be FEELING.
As a process, this program was helpful for school, teachers and students to change their attitude towards children with learning disabilities and to accommodate them in regular class set up effectively.
A big Thank you to I CAN- Design for Change!!
